AMX Automated Classrooms

Automated Systems Let Instructors Take Control

The concept of an automated classroom may seem like a nightmare scenario for those who are not comfortable with computers. Now everyone can breathe a sigh of relief, because Texas A&M's automated classrooms require no programming whatsoever. In fact, everything is designed to be very simple and easy to use. Once logged in using your NetID and password, you can turn on the projector, lower the screen, dim the lights, control speaker volume, and perform other tasks by simply selecting options on the classroom computer screen.

Automated classrooms let instructors concentrate on teaching, not on learning to operate complex technology. These classrooms feature a fixed overhead projector, screen, computer, built-in VCR/DVD player, and optional equipment such as a Smart Sympodium or document camera. Also installed is the AMX system hardware that enables instructors to easily operate the audio-visual equipment. Just as a home theater system can be controlled using one device instead of individual remotes for each component, the AMX system controls the classroom equipment through one interface.

The AMX system also allows the IMS technical support staff to remotely control and troubleshoot automated classrooms. Instructors can press a help button on the lectern that lets them communicate directly with a technician if a problem arises. From their offices, the IMS staff can access the room's control system and try to fix the problem immediately without having to go to the classroom.

To see if your classroom is automated, look up your classroom on the Classroom Equipment List and see if it has the Automated Control System icon.
